Today's Daily Devotional is a 12 minute video to start our Godly Play series. Especially with the current "pandemic" season we find ourselves in, this is an interesting reflection on the the church year. Right now we are technically in Lent, but we'll move through this series in a daily fashion for those interested.
At the end of the video, see if there's a way to create your own liturgical calendar, even if you simply draw one that you use only for today. Note which time of the church year you like best. Maybe try making one out of legos, or one that you can attach to a current calendar in your home. For this time of physical distancing, you can even create a special calendar just for this season. It can remind of you these stories you are learning, and maybe add a fun thing you did today (or the day before).
Students/Youth
Students can reflect with this video, or if they'd like a broader conversation, consider the calendar of a different religion. I often wonder what other religions can teach me, and how our different holidays have evolved over the centuries. What's your favorite holiday, and why? What's your grandparents' favorite holidays?
Here's a link to a short video of students explaining the Jewish year of holidays.
Parents/Adults
Parents, consider following along with "We Make the Road by Walking" (here's an Amazon link). I'll give a brief summary each day of the chapter, but you can also read along with a Kindle version around $14. Today's reading is the introduction, explaining that the book can be used throughout the liturgical year, although I'm going to use it as a daily devotional. Each chapter also includes scripture to be used. I'll do my best to coordinate chapeters and Godly Play lessons so that the family can join in together. I use McLaren as a resource for parents and volunteers, to help us see these Bible stories in a bigger picture, especially with connections to social justice themes along the way. Please reach out if you ever have questions or suggestions along the way! Otherwise, I hope you enjoy a bit more depth and refreshers along the way :-).
Peace,
Tory
